Dereck frowned, his eyebrows pulling together as his demeanor shifted from anxious to subtly controlling.

“Just let me talk to her,” he said, reaching directly for my pocket. “I’ll tell her where it is.”

“No!” I snapped, taking a quick step backward into the crowd of bustling travelers.

“I’ll just call her myself from the quiet corridor near the restrooms,” I added quickly, offering a strained, nervous laugh. “You stay here with the carry-on bags so we don’t lose our seats.”

Before he could protest or follow me, I turned on my heel and walked briskly away into the surge of the crowd, my heart hammering against my ribs.

The second I turned the corner out of his line of sight, I broke into an outright run toward the airport exit doors, dialing my mother’s number with trembling fingers.

“Mom! I’m running to a cab right now!” I gasped into the receiver, pushing past surprised tourists.

“Sweetheart, stay calm,” my mother urged, her voice fierce with protective maternal rage. “I have your spare car keys, and I’m waiting in your driveway right now.”

“What else is in that drawer, Mom?” I asked, my voice cracking as tears finally overflowed down my cheeks.

“He wiped your joint savings account, honey,” she whispered softly, the devastating truth hitting me like a physical blow.

“He transferred every cent out yesterday morning, and there’s a letter here from his attorney… he was going to disappear today and leave you with all the house debt.”

A cold wave of anger instantly replaced the overwhelming panic in my chest.

Within ten minutes, I threw myself into a yellow taxi outside the terminal, leaving Dereck sitting alone at the gate, completely unaware that his master plan had collided with the one person he had failed to account for: my mother.

By the time he realized I wasn’t coming back from the restroom, I was already standing in our bedroom with my mother, watching locksmiths change the front door locks and securing every remaining financial document in the house.

When Dereck finally pulled into the driveway forty-five minutes later in a panicked rage, he found his packed luggage sitting neatly on the front porch, flanked by two local police officers my mother had called to oversee the peace.

He stood on the lawn, pale, humiliated, and caught dead in his own elaborate trap, unable to utter a single word of defense as the officers handed him a formal trespass warning.

He had tried to stage a quiet escape and leave me broken at an airport gate, but he had underestimated the strength of the woman he left behind—and the unwavering devotion of a mother who refused to let her daughter be destroyed.
