My hand shook so violently that I almost dropped the phone onto the hard airport floor.

On the screen was a crisp, clear photo taken right inside Dereck’s bedside drawer.

Lying right next to his dark blue passport—which he had claimed was completely forgotten—was a thick, manila envelope containing legal divorce papers, already signed and notarized under his name, along with a pair of one-way international tickets to a completely different destination booked for himself alone.

I slowly locked my phone screen, shoving the device deep into my coat pocket as my pulse roared in my ears like a freight train.

“She… she couldn’t find it in the drawer,” I lied, forcing my voice to stay level, though every cell in my body was screaming in sheer panic.

“She said the house keys stuck in the lock and she needs me to talk her through opening the front door.”
